The Maha Bodhi Society of India was founded in 1891 by Sri Lankan Buddhist Anagarika Dharmapala and British poet and journalist Sir Edwin Arnold.

The Maha Bodhi Society of India Headquarters and temple in Kolkata are located at 4A, Bankim Chatterjee Street, College Square.

Next door to the headquarters is a Buddhist temple instantly recognisable from the street by its yellow exterior. Inside the walls and ceilings in the temple are painted with bright colourful murals depicting the life of Buddha.
